The generation of Millennials – young people between 18 and 30 years old born under the umbrella of new technologies – have different habits and expectations in business trips than in pleasure trips, a fact that Malaysia Mobile Database contrasts markedly when compared to older generations . This is confirmed by “The Future of Travel”, an international study launched by Expedia today that analyzes the trends and behavior of travelers in each country in relation to both types of travel.
8,535 working adults from 24 countries on the 5 continents were surveyed between August 20 and September 12, 2013 with one objective: to discover different behaviors according to the type of trip and, above all, according to the different ages. Younger population segments were compared with older ones in order to know what the trips will be like in the coming years.
“Our mission is to analyze how Millennials will impact the travel landscape as they gain more decision-making power in their work and more purchasing power in their lives,” explains Fabrizio Giulio, Director of Expedia in Spain and Italy. “By knowing their likes, dislikes, preferences and hobbies when it comes to traveling, we can meet the changing needs of our current and future travelers, adapting to changing times,” he adds.

Millennials are more in favor of mixing business with pleasure. This means that they are more likely than the elderly to extend their business trip and take advantage of it for a vacation. 62% of Millennials admit to doing so, and only 51% of workers between 31-45 years old and 37% of those between 46-65 years old have done it. Young Europeans (44%) do so less frequently than their counterparts in Asia (69%) and the United States and Canada (70%).
Almost 7 out of 10 or more workers in Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Norway, Sweden, Ireland and the United Kingdom say they have not extended a business trip for their vacation. The countries that most tend to do so when compared to their neighbors in Europe are Spain and the Netherlands.
Give up and be compensated
39% of all business travelers admit that they work longer hours during their trip than in the office. Europeans (45%) are more likely than workers in Asia (35%) and the United States (32%) to work longer hours than normal when traveling. Spain with 56% is one of the most prominent countries where it is considered that more work is done during a business trip than on a day-to-day basis. They are followed by Denmark (59%) and the Netherlands (51%).

Millennials are more likely to express their discontent when they travel for business and have had a bad experience in a hotel, restaurant, with the flight, the rental car … However, negative reviews are not usually something, at least for the majority of travelers worldwide (67%).
Comments and criticisms are considered factors of great importance when traveling for both business and vacations, particularly among Millennials, as 8 out of 10 (77% and 82% respectively) describe them as “very important” and “quite important” .
Norway and Denmark are the countries that least take opinions into account when it comes to traveling for business. In Denmark this also happens with holidays, as it is the travelers who consider the opinions of others least important. Spain is one of the European countries that most values the opinions of others regardless of the type of trip.
The key to the future of travel: mobile devices
The use of mobile devices does not understand ages when it comes to traveling for business. However, and as expected, its use is much more common in the Millennial generation than in any other segment of the population. Around 75% of travelers worldwide use Smartphones and Tablets for both work and personal reasons when traveling.
For the reservation of business trips, 32% of Millennials book using a Smartphone and 20% do so through a Tablet. On the other hand, of those over 45 only 12% make reservations with their Smartphone and 9% use a Tablet. Those aged 18-30 use mobile devices much more than those aged 46-65.
To book a vacation, 27% of Millennials do so via Smartphone and 14% through their Tablet. Among those over 45, only 7% use a Smartphone and 7% choose their Tablet.
The trend is that mobile devices will become the usual platform for planning trips over time, whatever they are. “We realize that Brother Cell Phone List keeping pace with Millennials and future generations of business travelers requires focusing much of our attention on mobile devices and reaching them with the appropriate information on these new travel planning platforms,” explains Giulio.
What factor most influences the purchase decision?
Location (53%) is the most important when traveling for business, followed by the price of the room (44%) and the duration of the trip to the city in question (42%). The price of the ticket is in fourth place.
