Twitter has decided to respond to the comments that point to its CEO, with a message in which it seeks to clarify its usage policies. During this morning’s conference, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) issued a comment that Kenya Mobile Database called into question the reputation and policies of Twitter. In his meeting with the media, the president accused that the general director of Twitter was a PAN member and that this apparent political preference defined the policies of the social network in favor of this political current.
This accusation took on special relevance after AMLO lashed out against certain decisions and policies implemented by both Twitter and Facebook on past occasions.
Last May, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reported that he will hold accountable for Facebook and Twitter the purchase of advertising and the use of bots within his service.
The president explained that he will ask these two large social networks for a list to know who their clients are, how paid campaigns work and if artificial accounts (bots) are used to create movements against them within the online environment.
In this way, AMLO pointed out that it is necessary to “ask Twitter and ‘Face’ to explain to us how they sell advertising for bots , and also – especially that they are accountable, that there is transparency – how much income Mexican companies per purchase advertising ”.
This petition arises from what, on several occasions, the president has described as a discrediting campaign against him, an issue that has been part of López Obrador’s speech since before the elections that gave him victory.
Now, before the new accusations issued by the president, Twitter has decided to respond to the comments that point to its CEO, with a message in which it seeks to make clear that its use policies do not respond to the guidelines or preferences of a single person regardless of the position held within the organization.
Through its official account aimed at the Mexican market, Twitter assured that “no person on Twitter is responsible, alone, for our compliance policies or actions, and it is regrettable to see comments directed at our employees as sole decision-makers or Company rules”.
Additionally, the brand specified that spokespersons only share internal decisions, while solving user doubts. Thus, the platform has focused on finding talent “with a relevant and diverse trajectory to objectively meet the requirements of each position”.
“As we have mentioned before, we reiterate that we will continue to be transparent about our policies, their evolution and their application, while always taking care of the safety of our employees,” the social network concluded in its statement.
The phenomenon in sight
The above is a clear example of how social networks have become an important muscle in the construction of democracy in the country.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are the backbone of the current president’s communication efforts, which allegedly had a role beyond the dissemination of information on his way to the presidential seat.
For many specialists, in the same way that Brother Cell Phone List happened with Donald Trump or Barack Obama, the efforts within these communication spaces were decisive for AMLO’s victory in the most recent presidential elections.
The importance of social networks in the panorama of political communication would force strategists in the field to understand these channels as something more than a simple means of diffusion and amplification of a message.
